Whistleblowing Policy

The Council has approved a Whistleblowing Policy to facilitate members of the Farriery profession and members of the public reporting dangerous or illegal activity or malpractice within the Farriery industry.  It covers anything which may be considered to be in the public interest and a report may be made by anyone, whether or not they are directly or personally affected by the activity reported.  

While not an exhaustive list, the following are the types of activity which should always be reported:

-          Financial malpractice, impropriety or fraud

-          Failure to comply with any legal statute or obligation

-          Dangers to health and safety and the environment

-          Violence

-          Criminal activity

-          Animal cruelty and danger or risks to animal welfare

-          Improper conduct or unethical behaviour

-          Attempts to conceal or misrepresent the circumstances in respect of any of the above.

There should be adequate cause and justification to make a report – whistle-blowers should take care to ensure the accuracy of matters reported.  Malicious or vexation reports – particularly if persistent – could be viewed as a serious matter.
