Farriery Apprenticeship Entry Requirements

Academic route

  •  5 GCSEs at Level C or above of which 1 must be English Language, 1 Mathematics and 1 a Science subject (**Scottish, Northern Ireland and EU equivalents will apply, see below)
  • City and Guilds Forging Certificate

Access Course

  •  a BTEC Level 2 or equivalent and must include:
    • Horse handling (5 credits)
    • Introduction to the principles of Horse Behaviour (5 credits)
    • Understand the Principles of Horse Biology (10 credits)
  • City & Guilds Forging Certificate
  • Functional Skill Level 2 – English
  • Functional Skill  Level 2 – Mathematics

 

**  The UK Qualification Comparison Chart, accessed on the Government website www.gov.uk/what-different-qualification-levels-mean/overview suggest the following qualification levels could be acceptable equivalents to the entry requirements above: 

  • Wales – Level 2

Including:

i)        NVQ Level 2

ii)      Vocational Qualifications Level 2

iii)    Welsh Baccalaureate Qualification Intermediate

iv)    GCSEs grade A* - C

 

  • Northern Ireland – Level 4

Including:

i)        Level 4 Certificate

ii)      Leaving Certificate

 

  • Scotland – Level 5

Including:

i)        Intermediate 2

ii)      Credit Standard Grade

iii)    SVQ 2

iv)    National Progression Awards

v)      National Certificates
